When Jesus first said this (Matt. 5.20), surely some who heard threw up their hands and said, “How, then, can anyone go to heaven?”  That would be like someone today saying you need to be more righteous than the clergy, or the seminary-trained, or Bible college grads, or Bible school professors to go to heaven.  In some people’s minds, they may be thinking, “I’m never going to make it.”
